Is ROT certification required to cast patients?
There is no state licensure for the Orthopedic Technologist in any state. There is no specific state government law requirement to be an ROT. The orthopedic professional certification of the staff is up to the employer. Most large health organizations & practices are now requiring passing a certification program such as ASOP’s to be employed as an Orthopedic Technologist. Medicare/CMS requires that billed office procedures be done by qualified personnel. Having an ROT certificate on the wall shows the patient and government inspection agencies that qualified personnel are preforming the procedures and working within their scope of practice. Casting is not within the scope of practice of a Medical Assistant. If you are an CMA/MA or hold another certification or state license that does not include casting in your scope of practice, you should consider the ROT certification to protect your future employment in orthopedics.
